R22 Replacement

The phasing out of R-22

R-22 is a hydro chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) which was until 2004 commonly used in air conditioning systems. R-22 contains chlorine which has a negative impact on the ozone layer when released into the atmosphere. The ozone layer depletion causes a number of both health and environmental issues.

The international community decided in the Montreal Protocol to phase out ozone depletion materials such as R-22 by 2030. The European Union, however decided to ban R-22 earlier.
